Begin the countdown

The trailer has been released for Wes Anderson's new film The Darjeeling Limited. I know many of you know my less-than-enthusiastic view on The Life Aquatic. I must say that based on this trailer, I won't be disappointed again.

I'll definately be seeing this, though I'm a little worried that's it's just the same West Anderson idea, same characters, different location. But of course the colors, aesthetic, and humor will be spot on as usual.

Oh man, that does look great! I'm excited. And even if it is "just the same Wes Anderson idea", I'm totally up for it. Reinvention can be overrated. Bobby, what was your problem with the Life Aquatic?

I should preface my response with the fact that I have still only seen Life Aquatic 2-3 times. According to Micah and Jon VP that is far too few to make an informed decision.

Overall, it had a ton of potential, but it gets really slow in parts and the dialog isn't to the standard that I expect from Anderson. Usually that can carry me through the most seemingly mundane situations. Also, none of the acting performances seemed that compelling. Usually a few stand out, but other than William DeFoe, whose character was memorable but weak in content, I wasn't impressed. Anyway, I need to watch it again, pick up on more nuances, and it's value in my book may increase. It just isn't anywhere near Anderson's previous efforts in my opinon (although still better than 90% of the films out there).

That makes a lot of sense. I can see how it doesn't exactly stack up to his earlier movies, in terms of the depth of the characters (acting). Not as focused, maybe. I get so starved for quality in movies these days, that I usually just look past everything, hehe. I think I have some kind of sentimental attachment to his style.

Life Aquatic is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. And the visual atmosphere can't be beat.

There is something to be said for movies with a pleasing style, aesthetic, or atmosphere. It is an important element that I look for, but I've found it doesn't completely satisfy. When I get done watching such movies, I find that I don't quite know whether I liked it. After a few days (sometimes sooner) I can sort out which pieces were missing and ultimately I question the quality of the movie. Movies like Virgin Suicides, The Squid and the Whale, and Broken Flowers are the most recent examples I can think of, but I know it happens more often. When these directors however, like Coppola or Jarmusch, get all the components functioning, it is usually an excellent film.

Nice commentary, Bobby. I think you hit it right on. Sometimes I like movies that I'm not sure I like because then I think about it more. For example Lost in Translation - wasn't sure I liked it the first time I saw it so I thought about it for awhile and kinda figured it out. Watched it again and appreciated it the second time.
